Welcome to our web site -- the latest addition to our auction business. I'm Richard Timothy "Tim" Miller. Along with my wife Mary, I started Tim Miller Auctions in 2003.
We handle sales involving estates, real estate, homes, antiques, and farm and livestock. We also provide fiduciary appraisals.
My Background
I've been going to auctions since I was a young boy. I started working in the auction business as a ring man -- holding up items for sale -- with the late G. Dale Bennett back in the 1980s. I learned all the jobs and then became an apprentice. I've worked with many of the area's top auctioneers, gleaning the best from each while adding my own style and always relying on my own Christian values.
Except for the four years that I spent in the Air Force, I've lived in South Berkeley, W.Va., all my life. My wife and I have been happily married since 1966 and have three grown daughters, all of whom help out with the business whenever asked. Our seven grandchildren, Victoria, Claire, Owen, Gwen, Olivia, Wade, and Mallory, all love to come out for our auctions.
In 1994, I retired from the former DuPont Potomac River Works in Falling Waters, W.Va., and now work on a part-time basis for the Berkeley County Board of Education.
Mary and I are active, long-time members of the First Baptist Church in Martinsburg, W.Va.
We live on a small homestead just south of Gerrardstown, W.Va., where we raise goats and poultry and in the summer tend to a large garden.
How We Do Business
Our business philosophy is simply this: We treat others as we'd like to be treated ourselves. We promise to treat everyone we work with fairly, honestly, and with respect. We employ a professional staff, several of whom have been with us since the beginning. These employees are honest and hard-working. They know how to treat customers properly and are the heart and soul of our business. You can look long and hard, and you won't find any better.
Common Mistakes/Misconceptions
When you're thinking about holding an auction, call so that we can discuss how to best meet your particular needs.
Know right up front that there are no "dumb" questions. An auction can be a complex, daunting undertaking, and it's perfectly normal to wonder if an auction is the right course of action.
We will listen to the details of your unique situation and offer a variety of options. We're always glad to explain everything involved in putting together a successful auction. I always tell people: You get ready for an auction the same way you eat an elephant -- just take it one bite at a time.
Some people think they don't have enough "stuff" to hold an auction. They believe it might be better to just set up a yard sale. Others begin giving away items or call in a junk man, and realize too late that an auction would have better served everyone involved.
Many people don't realize that real estate can be sold as part of an estate sale. (It can, and our commission is much lower than what a real estate agent charges.) Some believe firearms cannot be sold at auction, but the law says that they can.
When you select Tim Miller Auctions for your auction, we work with you from the moment the contract is signed right up until we hand the sale proceeds over to you. We explain what equipment and supplies we have available for your use, including a 30x45 foot tent.
